Saumil Parikh on Donkey B Syndrome: How Imaginary Worries Hold Us Back

Why Donkey B might be the root of all our problems. Read on.

Once, a group of mischievous kids decided to play a prank on their school, hoping to get a few extra holidays. Late at night, they sneaked two donkeys into the school grounds. They named and labelled one donkey “A” and the other “C.” The next morning, chaos erupted. The donkeys were running wild, causing mayhem.

In an attempt to restore order, the school declared a holiday, and animal welfare authorities were called in to round up the donkeys. By the end of the day, both Donkey A and Donkey C were caught and removed from the premises.

Yet, to everyone’s surprise, the school remained closed for days. Why? Because they were still searching for “Donkey B.”

The school authorities couldn’t understand why they hadn’t found the missing donkey. The kids, giggling behind the scenes, had pulled off the perfect prank. In truth, there was never a “Donkey B.” It was a figment of imagination that caused unnecessary worry and kept the school closed longer than needed.

Lesson: There is no Donkey B. Even in life. Most of your worries don’t exist.

We stress and worry about things that don’t even exist, or about future problems that may never arise. Instead of focusing on what’s in front of us, we let our minds run wild, wasting energy on imaginary issues.

So, the next time you’re worried, do take a moment to consider if you’re worried about a “Donkey B”
